KATHMANDU: Students of Karmada Secondary School, located in Bhanu Municipality Ward 9, Tanahun, have started cultivating vegetables.

This initiative involves students residing in the school’s hostel, who are balancing their studies with practical farming.

Principal Sanjay BK shared that students from Grade 10 began this farming effort to reduce the economic burden of purchasing vegetables for hostel meals. “The aim is to lessen financial pressure on the students and encourage their engagement in agriculture,” he said.

The school has received free land from the local community to support this project. On this land, spanning approximately two ropanis, students are cultivating a variety of crops, including potatoes, cauliflower, chilies, mustard greens, radishes, and leafy vegetables.

Principal Bik added, “We invested in seeds, fertilizers, and essential farming materials. Students contributed to acquiring potato seeds and fertilizers, while the school covered the remaining costs. Currently, we’ve planted 70 kilograms of potatoes, along with various types of radishes, mustard greens, and cauliflower saplings.”

The decision to start vegetable farming came after the hostel faced significant expenses for vegetables during the previous year.

This motivated the school and students to take up seasonal farming to reduce costs and promote self-reliance.

The project has gained support from both parents and the local community.

Parents have actively contributed by providing land and assisting with the farming process.

“Through this initiative, we not only aim to make students more self-sufficient but also inspire them to develop an interest in agriculture,” Principal Bik concluded.
