Tributes apid to Former Speaker Dhungana’s mortal remains at Gauchharan (photos)
The 83-year-old former Speaker, who had been receiving treatment for health issues related to his kidney, passed away on Sunday afternoon.
KATHMANDU: Former Speaker Damannath Dhungana’s mortal remains have been brought to the Sano Gauchharan area in Gyaneshwar for public tribute.
The 83-year-old former Speaker, who had been receiving treatment for health issues related to his kidney, passed away on Sunday afternoon at the Frontline Hospital in Baneshwar.
Following his death, Dhungana’s body was kept at the mortuary of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Political leaders from various parties, including Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, along with individuals from various sectors of society, paid their respects at the hospital.
Currently, a large crowd of people is gathered at Gauchharan for the tribute. Afterward, his cremation will take place at Pashupati Aryaghat.
The government of Nepal has decided to accord him a state funeral with full honors.
Dhungana, a lifelong advocate for multi-party democracy, peace, and human rights, played a key role in ending the Maoist insurgency and promoting national peace.
He was known for his clear and bold stance against political corruption and discrepancies. A legal expert and a constitutional scholar, Dhungana was elected to the House of Representatives from Kathmandu’s constituency no. 2 in 2048 BS and subsequently became the Speaker.
His contributions to strengthening Nepal’s parliamentary system and democratic values are highly regarded.
