RSP fails to field candidates in 18 positions
The party has also not fielded a candidate in Kathmandu's Kirtipur Municipality.
KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has fielded candidates in 26 local levels for the upcoming local by-elections scheduled for Dec 1.
However, the party has not fielded candidates for 18 positions, including the positions of Chief of the District Coordination Committee (DCC) in Kailali and Okhaldhunga, as well as Mayor, Municipality Chairperson, and Ward Chairperson in several areas.
The party has also not fielded a candidate in Kathmandu’s Kirtipur Municipality.
Here are the RSP candidates for the elections:
Why were candidates not fielded in 18 positions?
Rastriya Swatantra Party’s acting General Secretary, Kavindra Burlakoti, explained that the party did not field candidates in 18 positions due to its internal criteria and the relatively weak organizational presence in some areas.
According to him, only one application was received for the position of Mayor in Kirtipur, but the applicant was confused, leading to the decision not to contest.
Burlakoti stated that the party’s candidate selection criteria were stringent, and some potential candidates hesitated to apply.
He also emphasized that the party had not focused enough on areas where its organizational presence was thin.
The upcoming by-elections on Dec 1 will fill 44 vacant positions, including two District Coordination Committee Chiefs, two Rural Municipality Chairs, four Vice Chairs, one Municipality Mayor, one Deputy Mayor, and 34 Ward Chairpersons.
