KATHMANDU: Former Speaker of the House, Damannath Dhungana, has passed away at the age of 83.
Following his death, the government has announced a national mourning period.
An emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Monday morning expressed deep sorrow over Dhungana’s passing and decided to observe national mourning.
The meeting also declared a public holiday across the country today and instructed that national flags be flown at half-mast at government offices and missions.
Dhungana had been undergoing treatment for liver-related issues for some time before passing away at Frontline Hospital in Baneshwor on Sunday afternoon.
After his death, his body has been kept at the morgue of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
A tribute ceremony will be held at the Sano Gaucharn in Gyaneshwor from 11 a.m. today, where various political leaders, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and other notable figures, will participate.
Following the tribute, Dhungana’s body will be cremated at the Pashupati Aryaghat, according to family sources.
