RSP candidate abducted in Humla amid election preparations
The party claims the perpetrators are affiliated with the Nepali Congress youth wing.
KATHMANDU: Sujata Thapa, a vice chairperson candidate for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Sarkegad Rural Municipality, Humla, was reportedly abducted in broad daylight.
According to RSP, a group of 40–45 youths, allegedly affiliated with the Nepali Congress, forcefully dragged Thapa and her husband, Bal Thapa, from their residence on Nov 16 at around 1 PM.
They were taken to an undisclosed location.
The RSP claims that the candidate faced threats and psychological pressure not to file her nomination.
She was allegedly warned of dire consequences if she proceeded with her candidacy, leaving her and her family in distress.
Chief District Officer Narayan Pandey confirmed receiving information about the incident and stated that police had been deployed for rescue efforts.
RSP’s acting General Secretary, Kabindra Burlakoti, revealed that the threats and abduction have made Thapa reconsider her decision to file a nomination.
The family is reportedly under severe mental stress and feels unsafe to proceed.
RSP members involved in campaign activities in Sarkegad have also faced harassment, physical assault, and mistreatment.
The party further alleged similar intimidation tactics in Madhesh State, where potential RSP candidates have been threatened and lured with bribes to deter them from participating.
Issuing a statement, RSP condemned these acts as undemocratic and criticized local authorities for failing to provide timely support and conduct a thorough investigation.
The party has demanded immediate action to ensure the safety of its candidates and their families.
