Migratory birds arrive in Chitwan’s rivers for winter season
Basu Bidari, Bagmati State Coordinator of the Nepalese Ornithological Union, reported that over 40 bird species have been sighted in the Rapti, Narayani, and Riyu rivers of Chitwan.
KATHMANDU: As winter sets in, migratory birds from countries such as Mongolia, China, Siberia, and Russia have been spotted in Chitwan’s rivers.
Basu Bidari, Bagmati State Coordinator of the Nepalese Ornithological Union, reported that over 40 bird species have been sighted in the Rapti, Narayani, and Riyu rivers of Chitwan.
“The migratory birds have been seen along the riverbanks, attracting tourists for bird watching,” Bidari shared. Various species, including Maalak duck, ducks with green heads, Kalijure duck, Suirepuchhre duck, Kharakhare duck, Kal duck, Thulo Jalewa, and Chakhewa, can be observed in the wetlands.
These birds migrate to Nepal seeking food, as rivers in their native regions freeze during the winter months.
Bidari added that around 150 to 160 species of migratory birds visit Chitwan annually, although they do not hatch here.
As summer approaches, the birds return to their original habitats.
