KATHMANDU: President Ramchandra Paudel has emphasized the need to address climate issues and poverty alleviation programs in an integrated manner.
Speaking at a high-level session organized by Kyrgyzstan during the COP-29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Monday, he stated that to provide justice to those affected by climate change, their challenges must be addressed in a holistic way.
He mentioned, “The youth from mountainous regions migrate abroad due to climate change, and the poor, women, children, and elderly are the ones most affected. To provide justice, we must address both the climate issues and poverty alleviation programs they face in an integrated manner.”
President Paudel pointed out that the climate issues faced by the citizens of mountainous areas are not of their own making but are a result of carbon emissions from developed nations that have exploited natural resources at a rapid pace. “I am confident that COP-29 will succeed in delivering climate justice to these communities,” he said.
He also highlighted the increasing effects of climate change, which continue to break new records each year, and noted that the mountainous regions are comparatively more vulnerable.
He referred to the recent disaster in the Everest region, where the icefall in August caused the displacement of more than 35 households in Thame Village, Solukhumbu, resulting in significant losses. He also mentioned that over 500 people lost their lives in the floods and landslides during this year’s monsoon season in Nepal.
“The pain of these losses is still fresh. If we do not take adequate precautions and fail to address the issue, it will worsen and create a more catastrophic situation in the future,” President Paudel warned.
He also pointed out that Nepal and Kyrgyzstan, as mountainous countries, share similar challenges due to climate change. Additionally, he recalled the past collaboration between Nepal and Kyrgyzstan in the conservation of snow leopards.
At the conference, the Presidents of Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan also spoke.
The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP-29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which began on Nov 11 in Baku, continues to focus on addressing global climate issues.
