Maoist Centre announces candidates for Kirtipur by-election (photos)
For the mayoral and two ward chairperson positions, the party has fielded Professor Dr. Shivasharan Mahajan as the candidate for mayor.
KATHMANDU: In the upcoming by-election to be held on Mangsir 16 (Dec 1), Kathmandu’s Kirtipur Municipality, the CPN (Maoist Centre) has announced its candidates.
For the mayoral and two ward chairperson positions, the party has fielded Professor Dr. Shivasharan Mahajan as the candidate for mayor.
At the candidate announcement event today, Maoist Centre Chiar Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and other party leaders addressed the gathering.
During the event, mayoral candidate Mahajan stated that he would only wear a khada (traditional scarf) and garland after winning the election, refusing to do so at the program. He said, “I will wear the people’s garland only after winning the election.”
In the Kirtipur by-election, the CPN-UML has already announced Dr. Surendra Manandhar as its mayoral candidate, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party has decided to field Dhruv Mahajan.
The Nepali Congress has yet to announce its candidate.
The by-election in Kirtipur is being held following the death of Mayor Rajkumar Nakarmi in Shrawan 2081 due to cancer.
Similarly, the positions of ward chairs for Ward No. 1 and Ward No. 4 have become vacant after the deaths of Ward Chair Heeralal Mahajan due to cancer in Falgun 2080, and Ward Chair Shyam Kumar Adhikari in a motorcycle accident.
The by-election for these and other vacant positions of elected representatives, across 40 areas nationwide, is scheduled for Mangsir 16 (Dec 1).
