Trump considers Senator Marco Rubio for Secretary of State
The decision is not yet final.
KATHMANDU: Newly-elected U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to nominate Florida Senator Marco Rubio as the Secretary of State. Citing anonymous sources, reports indicate that Trump, who had earlier considered Rubio as a potential running mate, is now looking at him as a strong candidate for the role of Secretary of State. However, the decision is not yet final.
Alongside former Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell, Rubio has recently been a key figure discussed to lead U.S. diplomacy. Last week, Rubio told CNN, “I am always ready to serve this country.”
Rubio’s potential appointment as a top U.S. diplomat marks a significant shift in his relationship with Trump. Rubio, a conservative senator with Cuban heritage, once described Trump as a “con artist” and “the most vulgar person to ever run” during their 2016 Republican presidential race.
Born to Cuban immigrant parents in Miami, Rubio graduated with a degree in political science from the University of Florida in 1993. In 2010, following President Barack Obama’s election, Rubio won a Senate seat with strong backing from the Tea Party, the Republican Party’s far-right faction.
Rubio’s nomination would not only bring his Cuban-American legacy to the forefront but also signal a noteworthy evolution in his political dynamic with Trump.
