COP29 kicks off in Baku

KATHMANDU: The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) commenced on Monday in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The primary goal of this year’s climate conference is to revise the existing collective target of mobilizing and providing $100 billion annually by developed countries to support developing nations, and to explore new climate finance goals.
Scheduled from Nov 11 to 22, the conference will also focus on issues such as the global carbon trading market and the global energy transition away from fossil fuels.
In his opening speech, COP-29 President-elect and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, emphasized that the new targets must be effective and adequate to address urgent issues.
