KATHMANDU: Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is currently held in custody by Kaski Police on charges related to cooperative fraud.

Detained from the party office in Baneshwor on Oct 18, his remand has been extended by an additional 13 days.

Meanwhile, a party meeting was conducted on Monday, with Lamichhane attending from within police custody.

According to central committee member Jwala Sangraula, the meeting included Vice-Chairpersons DP Aryal and Dr. Swarnim Wagle, along with Acting Spokesperson Manish Jha. Sangraula confirmed via Facebook that the meeting, held within the detention center, lasted for approximately half an hour.

Acting Spokesperson Jha stated that the party leaders used the meeting to discuss internal matters with Lamichhane. He also announced that a press conference will be held on Wednesday to inform the public about the party’s upcoming protest actions and political strategy.

However, Vice-Chairperson DP Aryal refuted claims of an official party meeting within the detention center, saying they had merely gone as common citizens to meet with the chairperson. Another Vice-Chairperson, Dr. Swarnim Wagle, argued that Lamichhane’s detention was politically motivated, intended to settle personal scores. He noted that while judicial investigations are not opposed, political retaliation should not be disguised as legal action.

Wagle added that an upcoming press conference will provide further details on the party’s second phase of protest, emphasizing that appointing an acting chairperson is currently a secondary concern for the party.
