KATHMANDU: President Ramchandra Paudel has reached in Baku, Azerbaijan, to participate in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP-29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Upon reaching at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, he was welcomed by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Justice, Farid Terav Ahmadov.

During their meeting, President Paudel emphasized that climate change is one of the world’s most pressing issues. He stressed that the conference must urge developed countries to reduce carbon emissions and fulfill their commitments to invest in climate funds. At the same time, it should encourage investments for developing countries, which contribute less to carbon emissions but suffer the most from climate impacts. This information was shared by his press advisor, Kiran Pokhrel.

Minister Ahmadov highlighted that the main theme of the conference revolves around this very issue, noting the need for justice for developing nations. He pointed out that while Azerbaijan does not have mountains like Nepal, the glaciers here are melting, causing water sources to dry up.

The high-level Nepalese delegation, led by President Paudel, arrived in Baku via Doha, Qatar. The delegation includes First Lady Sabita Paudel, Minister of Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi, presidential advisors, and senior government officials.

During the conference, President Paudel will address the “World Leaders Climate Action Summit” as part of a high-level session. On Nov 13, a separate high-level session will be held under President Paudel’s leadership to highlight Nepal’s agenda. The conference will run until Nov 22, with President Paudel scheduled to return to Nepal on Nov 15.
