Local level by-election: 226,799 voters set to cast their ballots
Elections will be held to fill 44 vacant positions in various local levels, including posts such as mayors, rural municipality chairpersons, and ward chairs.
KATHMANDU: On Dec 1, the local level by-elections are scheduled to take place across Nepal.
Elections will be held to fill 44 vacant positions in various local levels, including posts such as mayors, rural municipality chairpersons, and ward chairs.
This also includes elections for two district coordination committees, bringing the total count of positions to be filled to 44.
On Monday, the Election Commission of Nepal released the final voter list for the upcoming by-elections.
A total of 226,799 voters will participate in these local elections.

The final voter list, as issued by the Election Commission, includes 111,896 female voters, 114,900 male voters, and 188 voters who identify as other genders, according to a press release from the Commission’s Secretary and spokesperson, Narayan Prasad Sapkota.
There will be 162 polling sites and 293 polling centers to facilitate the voting process.
Suman Ghimire, the Information Officer at the Election Commission, informed Makalu Khabar that preparations are now in their final stages. He mentioned that election officers have already been appointed and will begin their training on Wednesday.
“Voter lists are now being printed, and training for election officers is scheduled to begin the day after tomorrow,” Ghimire shared with Makalu Khabar. “The Commission’s preparations are nearing completion.”
The Election Commission requested Rs 240 million for the by-elections, but the government has allocated only Rs 120 million.
According to Ghimire, existing resources and materials will be utilized to conduct the by-elections.
The nomination registration for candidates is set for Nov 17. A restricted period will be enforced starting at midnight on Nov 28 (48 hours before voting begins), and voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec 1.
Twenty-five political parties have already registered with the Election Commission to participate in the by-elections, with each party currently engaged in selecting their candidates.
