KATHMANDU: The Hindu festival of Chhath, celebrated with great importance in the Terai region of Nepal, was also observed in the United States.
Nepalis in states like New York, Maryland, Virginia, Texas, California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio gathered at local temples to celebrate the festival.
In Maryland’s Germantown, the Nepal Education and Cultural Center organized a Chhath festival event, attracting a large crowd of Nepalis offering prayers at sunset on Thursday.
According to the organizers, the celebration will conclude with offerings to the rising sun on Friday morning.
Event organizer Mohan Yadav expressed his happiness about being able to celebrate Chhath at a Nepali-founded temple, a development that has been possible for the past few years.
He noted that devotees fasted for three days and worshipped Chhathi Mata, involving the younger generation in the traditions.
Yadav stated, “We are encouraging the younger generation here in the diaspora to understand and celebrate the values and scientific significance of our Sanatan Dharma, including Chhath. Many Nepalis in the U.S. observe the festival at home, in groups, or at temples, depending on their community setting.”
