TikTok officially registered in Nepal
The social media platform had previously submitted a letter to the Nepalese government, confirming its compliance with the required processes.
KATHMANDU: TikTok has officially registered in Nepal after completing the necessary legal procedures and submitting a formal letter to the government, according to the Ministry of Communications.
Gajendra Kumar Thakur, the Ministry’s Deputy Secretary, confirmed that TikTok’s registration followed the social media regulation guidelines set by the government.
With this registration, TikTok is now legally recognized in Nepal. This development is expected to contribute to the promotion of Nepal’s tourism sector, with TikTok expressing its commitment to supporting digital literacy in the country as well.
Previously, under the leadership of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda), the government had imposed a ban on TikTok, citing concerns about its role in spreading misinformation and social disruption.
The ban was imposed on 13 Nov 2023 (27th Kartik 2080), but after the formation of the government under Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the ban was lifted on 22 August 2024 (6th Bhadra 2081).
With the lifting of the ban and the official registration, TikTok can now legally operate in Nepal.
