KATHMANDU: An eruption of Mount Lewotobi in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia has claimed the lives of at least 10 people, according to Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
Muhari confirmed that 10 deaths have been reported, with the bodies of nine victims already recovered.
One individual remains trapped under debris.
The volcanic eruption has caused widespread displacement, with more than 10,000 people from seven villages seeking refuge in evacuation centers.
Authorities have warned residents not to approach the danger zone, which extends 7 kilometers from the volcano’s crater.
In response to the crisis, local authorities declared a state of emergency from Nov 4 to Dec 31 to facilitate relief efforts.
Mount Lewotobi is one of Indonesia’s 127 active volcanoes, making the region particularly vulnerable to volcanic eruptions.
