KATHMANDU: MP Dr. Toshima Karki from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has expressed grave concerns regarding the health safety of prisoners in Nepal’s jails.

She highlighted that inmates are not being provided with essential items like mosquito repellent incense and liquid, which are crucial in light of the recent spike in dengue cases.

Addressing the Home Minister on social media, Dr. Karki pointed out the alarming increase in dengue infections in Kaski district, urging the government to take immediate action. She questioned, “Shouldn’t the health safety of those imprisoned be a priority?”

Dr. Karki emphasized the need for the government to ensure adequate health protection for prisoners, advocating for the provision of mosquito repellent incense and liquids in all detention facilities and prisons across the country.

She stated, “Not even a single mosquito repellent incense or liquid has been provided. Urgent measures should be implemented to control dengue, and arrangements for mosquito repellents should be made in all prisoner cells and jails.”

Additionally, she raised concerns about the health condition of Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently in custody. Following his arrest on October 19, he was taken to Pokhara for detention on the same night.

Dr. Karki expressed worry that with his extended stay in custody, there is a significant risk of him contracting dengue.

Her statements call for immediate governmental attention to ensure the health and safety of all individuals in custody amid rising health concerns.
