KATHMANDU: Heavy rainfall on Sept 28 caused significant flooding, damaging the water supply infrastructure along the Nakkhu River in Lalitpur.

However, the water has now been successfully transported to the Sundarighat Water Treatment Center.

Following the incident, Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav directed repairs of the washed-away pipelines and the installation of new ones to restore water supply.

Ashok Paudel, CEO of Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Limited (KUKL), reported that a technical team managed to bring water to the treatment center early this morning at 4 AM.

Due to contamination from the flood, the water being processed at Sundarighat must undergo cleaning, and Minister Yadav has instructed that the water tanks at the center be cleaned and treated before distribution.

Currently, the center is receiving 6.5 million liters of water daily, which will be supplied to areas including Balkhu, Kumari Club, Teku, and Sabal Bahal, as noted by Prakash Kumar Rai, the manager and spokesperson for KUKL.

The floods washed away approximately 250 meters of 400 mm pipeline in the Nakkhu River, which has now been replaced, allowing water to flow to the Sundarighat treatment facility.

Additionally, the Ministry of Water Supply reported that flooding and landslides across the country have damaged 525 water supply projects. Restoration efforts for these affected projects are now underway, with priority given to repairs.
