KATHMANDU: A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the donation of land by Min Bahadur Gurung, the owner of Bhat-Bhateni Department Store, for the construction of the new party office of the CPN-UML in Kirtipur.

Advocate Gyan Bahadur Basnet registered the writ on Wednesday, claiming that accepting the land and opening a party office for a political party amounts to corruption.

The petition was filed at a time when questions are being raised about the acquisition of land from a controversial figure. Prime Minister and UML Chair KP Sharma Oli had already inaugurated the building, which led to the demand for an interim order to halt further progress.

Min Bahadur Gurung, who donated 10 ropanis and 14 annas of land, is facing a corruption case related to the Lalita Niwas land scam.

Initially, the Supreme Court had rejected the registration of the writ, but Justice Til Prasad Shrestha’s bench overturned the decision on Tuesday, instructing the court to register the writ.
