KATHMANDU: As the festival of Tihar approaches, potters in Bhaktapur’s famous ‘Pottery Square’ are busy crafting clay lamps, locally known as pala.

During Tihar, Nepalis traditionally light up their homes by placing oil and wicks inside these clay lamps, creating a beautiful display of light.

While electric lights are now widely available, the use of pala during the festival remains an enduring tradition.

Many households still prefer to follow this age-old custom, keeping the lamps’ significance alive.

As a result, the demand for pala significantly rises during Tihar, compared to other times of the year.
