KATHMANDU: Tihar, widely known as the “festival of flowers,” holds special significance for the marigold flower, particularly the velvet marigold.

The flower is considered a symbol of long life and good health, as it is believed to never wither.

This is why, during Tihar, sisters in Nepal lovingly adorn their brothers with garlands of velvet makhamali, wishing them longevity and good health.

As Tihar approaches, the courtyards, edges, and fields of rural areas are already blossoming with vibrant yellow marigolds and deep shades of maroon and light red velvet makhamali.

However, when it comes to the Kathmandu Valley, the primary hub for velvet makhamali production is considered to be in Suryabinayak Municipality-7, specifically the village of Gundu.

Farmers in Gundu are currently busy picking velvet marigold flowers to prepare garlands.

Since the flowers never wilt, they make the garlands well in advance of the Tihar celebrations, ensuring they are ready in time for the festival.
