KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs for details regarding the relinquishment of Nepali citizenship by individuals who have obtained non-resident Nepali citizenship.

During today’s meeting, the Commission decided to demand the details of the prior citizenship renunciation for individuals who have acquired non-resident Nepali citizenship, in order to update the voter list for the local level by-elections.

According to the law, the details of citizenship relinquishment must be provided by the District Administration Office.

Narayan Prasad Sapkota, the Commission’s spokesperson, stated that individuals wishing to obtain non-resident Nepali citizenship must present proof of renunciation of their previous Nepali citizenship if they held it before.

In line with this provision, the Commission has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure that the relevant District Administration Offices submit the details of the renounced Nepali citizenship to the District Election Office by Oct 21.

Based on the information received from the District Administration Office, the Commission will cross-check the details against the voter list and remove the names of those who have renounced their citizenship, thereby updating the voter list accordingly.
