KATHMANDU: A teenager has successfully undergone treatment at Nepal Medical College after suffering a severe kidney injury while playing football.

Robin Tamang from Bhotechaur, Sindhupalchowk, sustained the injury when an opposing player’s knee struck his lower abdomen during the game.

On Oct 6, a team of urologists and kidney transplant surgeons, led by Dr. Vesh Ansari, performed the surgery to repair Robin’s kidney, which had been ruptured. “Due to excessive bleeding, the kidney was obscured, and it was only visible on a CT scan that the kidney had been severed. By that time, his body had already lost a significant amount of blood,” Dr. Ansari explained. “We acted promptly and performed surgery to repair the damage. His condition is improving now.”

Dr. Ansari was assisted in the surgery by residents Dr. Bidhan and Dr. Hemanta from the college.

The incident occurred on Oct 3 at the Mankamana Futsal in Makalbari, where the knee of an opposing player struck Robin and fell to the ground.

Despite experiencing intense pain in his abdomen, he still attended an exam at Mankamana School on the same day. After returning home and finding that the pain had not subsided, his family brought him to the emergency department of Nepal Medical College at 1 PM.

According to Dr. Ansari, Robin’s kidney was injured due to the knee impact in the lower abdominal area. “It’s not uncommon for the kidney to be injured during accidents. However, it was unusual for the kidney to be nearly severed while playing football,” he noted.

Dr. Ansari stated that it may take several months for Robin’s kidney to fully recover, adding, “The surgery went well, and both kidneys are functioning properly.” He emphasized that if the surgery had been delayed, Robin’s kidney might have ceased functioning altogether.

Robin’s mother, Roji Tamang, expressed her gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff involved in the treatment after the successful surgery. “I was very scared when I saw my son’s condition. I feared they would have to remove his kidney. But the doctors were determined and showed us that they could save him. I thank everyone for saving my son’s life.”

Since the arrival of Dr. Vesh Ansari as a kidney specialist, Nepal Medical College has seen advancements in the treatment of complex kidney and urinary issues.

Dr. Ansari has been serving as a urologist and kidney transplant surgeon at Nepal Medical College for the past two years.
