KATHMANDU: Just hours after the announcement of assembly election results in India-administered Kashmir, a soldier has been abducted and killed by suspected militants, according to police reports.

This marks the first assembly elections in the region in over a decade.

The incident occurred in Anantnag district on Tuesday evening, when two soldiers were reportedly kidnapped.

One soldier managed to escape but was injured, sustaining two gunshot wounds, and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Following the abduction, a search operation was launched, leading to the discovery of another soldier’s body in the forest on Wednesday morning.

Since the armed insurgency began in 1989, tens of thousands of civilians, soldiers, and militants have lost their lives in the conflict.

Currently, at least 500,000 Indian troops are stationed in Kashmir.

India has long accused Pakistan of supporting and providing weapons to militants in the region.

The two nuclear-armed neighbors have fought several wars over Kashmir since gaining independence from British rule in 1947, with the territory remaining a flashpoint in their contentious relationship.
