KATHMANDU: As Dashain and Tihar approach, colorful kites have started to fill the skies of Kathmandu.

It is believed that flying kites in Kathmandu signifies a message to Lord Indra, the rain god, symbolizing that enough rain has been received and that the rains should now stop.

With kites soaring through the sky, it marks the beginning of the festive Dashain atmosphere.

Currently, kite trading has surged across Kathmandu’s alleys, squares, and commercial areas.

Shopkeepers are struggling to meet the growing demand from customers.

Unlike the traditional paper kites made locally, the market is now dominated by colorful plastic kites imported from India.

According to vendors, the locally-made paper kites are more expensive, which has led consumers to prefer the more affordable plastic kites from India.
