Monsoon disaster: Death toll rises to 244

KATHMANDU: The recent late monsoon-induced disaster has resulted in the tragic loss of 244 lives, with 19 individuals still reported missing due to the floods and landslides that struck the country last week.

According to Rishiram Tiwari, spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, a total of 179 people have sustained injuries from the disaster-related incidents.

In the aftermath, 17,174 individuals have been successfully rescued from areas affected by the floods and landslides.

Efforts are currently underway to mobilize relief support for survivors and to repair the highways and roads that have suffered significant damage, Tiwari added.

Once details of the flood survivors are collected from the relevant local authorities, financial assistance for temporary housing will be distributed.

Additional support, including food rations, has already been provided to affected families at the local level.

The government has allocated financial support of Rs. 200,000 to families who have lost a member in this disaster.

To date, 160 families have received assistance through the District Disaster Management Fund.
