KATHMANDU: Local residents staged a protest by throwing stones at the Biratnagar Customs Office on Friday following the tragic death of a cyclist, Shyam Sah, aged 60, who was struck by a truck.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening when a truck, bearing the registration number Na 4 Kha 2483, hit Sah while he was cycling towards the Integrated Check Post (ICP) from Biratnagar.

He sustained severe injuries and succumbed to them while being transported to the hospital.

According to DSP Bedprakash Joshi of the Morang Police, the locals blamed the accident on the truck’s excessive speed and subsequently gathered at the customs office to protest.

Sah’s family refused to accept the body, citing negligence on the part of the truck driver as the cause of the accident.

To control the situation, police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Joshi reported that the protest resulted in minor damage to the customs gate and building.
