KATHMANDU: With the continued influence of monsoon winds across the country, light to moderate rainfall is occurring in eastern and central Nepal.

The ongoing changes in weather are due to the monsoon still lingering over Nepal.

While the monsoon winds have not triggered rainfall in the west, light rains are being observed in central and eastern regions. The Meteorological Forecasting Division has indicated that some areas in the Bagmati and Koshi States may experience heavy rainfall today and tomorrow.

Vibhuti Pokhrel, spokesperson for the department, stated that the current rainfall system is not expected to have as devastating an impact as the one from last weekend. However, she urged caution as the risk of landslides remains.

Last week’s heavy rains caused significant damage across the country. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 239 people have lost their lives so far, with 22 still missing. Landslides and floods have also complicated efforts to reopen blocked roads.

NDRRMA spokesperson Dijan Bhattarai warned that the current rains could destabilize already weakened terrain, requiring extra caution. “While vehicles can still operate, it is advisable to avoid traveling on risky roads during rain,” Bhattarai said.

Meteorologists have noted that, while the upcoming rainfall is not expected to be as heavy, the landslide risk remains high.

The official date for the monsoon to retreat was Oct 2 (Ashoj 16), which has already passed, and about 20 percent more rain than the average has fallen so far this season.
