KATHMANDU: Shigeru Ishiba, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), has been formally elected as the country’s Prime Minister after securing a majority in both houses of parliament.

A special parliamentary session was convened in the afternoon to select the new Prime Minister.

With the ruling coalition led by the LDP controlling both houses, the 67-year-old Ishiba received 291 out of 461 votes in the House of Representatives and 143 out of 242 votes in the House of Councillors.

Ishiba announced that his cabinet would include 13 first-time appointments, two reappointments, and four ministers with previous cabinet experience.
