KATHMANDU: The Balaju Fruit and Vegetable Market in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-14 has suffered damage estimated at around three crore rupees due to recent heavy rainfall.
Operated by Surya Kamal Pvt. Ltd., the market spans an area of 15 ropanis and is located within the flood-prone zones of the Bagmati and Balkhu rivers.
According to the company’s accountant, Reshaw Joshi, the market houses approximately 500 wholesale vegetable and agricultural product stalls.
The recent unrelenting rains have caused significant flooding, disrupting operations in the market area.
Efforts to clear the mud from the market are still ongoing.
Gopal Katwal, who has operated a wholesale shop in Balkhu for the past four years, reported that he had stocked goods worth 20 lakh rupees for the Dashain festival, all of which have been destroyed by the flood.
He mentioned that he is currently trying to salvage what remains by clearing out the mud.
