KATHMANDU: In the past 12 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall has been occurring across the country, according to the Weather Forecast Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

The division’s report indicates that heavy rainfall has been recorded in most parts of the country, including the Kathmandu Valley.

Meteorologist Binu Maharjan stated that rainfall is ongoing in most parts of the country, including Kathmandu. She mentioned that heavy rainfall has been observed in some areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini States.

In the last 12 hours, extremely heavy rainfall has been recorded in Koshi State, particularly in Jhapa and Ilam districts. Anarmani in Jhapa recorded 203 mm of rainfall, Chandragadhi Airport saw 260 mm, and Ilam registered 243 mm, according to Maharjan.

In the last hour, there has been relatively less rainfall in Sudurpashchim and Karnali States. In some parts of Kathmandu, heavy rainfall has been measured, with Kirtipur recording 84 mm, Budhanilkantha 65 mm, and other areas of Kathmandu more than 60 mm.

In Lalitpur, Lele recorded 115.5 mm, while Godavari saw 93.8 mm of rainfall. The meteorologist mentioned that rain continues across all provinces, with the likelihood of rainfall persisting throughout tomorrow.

The department also forecasted that the weather would gradually improve after midday on Sunday. Due to continuous rain, water levels in most rivers and streams, including in the Kathmandu Valley, have risen.

The Bagmati, Bishnumati, and Dhobikhola rivers in Kathmandu, Karmanasa in Lalitpur, and Hanumante in Bhaktapur are experiencing high water levels. The rainfall has disrupted normal life in Kathmandu and across the country.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued mobile alerts, urging the public to exercise caution.

The current water levels in the Bagmati River, Khokana, Manohara, Gaurighat, Balkhu Khola, Balambu, and Bishnumati at Gongabu Bus Park have surpassed warning levels and are rising. The department has requested people living in and traveling near riverbanks to remain on high alert.

The monsoon system remains active across the country, while a low-pressure system in northern central Maharashtra and nearby regions in India is also impacting Nepal’s weather, according to the department.
