KATHMANDU: The Jitiya festival, a significant celebration observed by women from the Tharu and Maithili communities of the Terai region, is being joyfully celebrated today.

In the Terai-Madhesh districts of State 1, this festival is marked with great enthusiasm and devotion.

Jitiya is primarily observed on the Ashtami Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin, with women fasting for the well-being and longevity of their children.

The observances begin on the Saptami Tithi, when participants purify themselves with ritual baths. The fast starts with the arrival of Ashtami Tithi and concludes with puja rituals on Navami Tithi.

A key part of this tradition is listening to the stories and praises of Lord Jitavahana, a revered figure. Jitiya is especially important to the Tharu and Maithili communities, symbolizing children’s joy, peace, and vitality.

The festival’s origins trace back to the Satya Yuga when Lord Vishnu blessed the righteous Jitavahana, leading to the practice of fasting and worshipping him for the protection of children against premature death.

As a vital folk tradition of the Terai-Madhesh, this festival holds deep cultural significance.
