KATHMANDU: On Friday, police made public a suspect involved in the murder of a mother and son in Sorungchhabise, Ward 10 of Katari Municipality, Udayapur, which occurred on Sept 5 (Bhadra 20).

The suspect, 32-year-old Tara Bahadur Thapa Magar from Sorungchhabise, was accused of murdering 38-year-old Nirmala Thapa, who ran a grocery store near the ward office, and her six-year-old son, Aarush Thapa.

A team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajan Chapagain had been investigating the case in Sorungchhabise. “The suspect was arrested only on Thursday following the investigation,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harihar Nath Yogi, head of the District Police Office, Udayapur.

According to SSP Yogi, on the night of the incident, the accused entered the victim’s sleeping area, where an argument ensued between them.

In a fit of rage, the suspect attacked Nirmala with a khukuri (a traditional Nepali knife).

The police report states that the suspect had taken the khukuri from his home.

Following the argument, he repeatedly struck Nirmala with the weapon.

When her son Aarush, who was sleeping nearby, woke up and started screaming, the suspect also attacked and killed him with the same khukuri.

“This is just the preliminary investigation. We have been granted a seven-day extension for further investigation,” SSP Yogi said, adding, “We recovered the khukuri used in the crime, the deceased woman’s mobile phone, and the half-pants that the suspect had washed and dried by the nearby river after the incident.”

According to the police, the accused even visited the crime scene the next morning. He attended the post-mortem at Katari Hospital, mingling with the locals, and was present at the funeral.

This delayed his arrest as it took time to gather the necessary evidence, explained DSP Rajan Chapagain, who was involved in the investigation.

The victim’s husband, Ashok Thapa, had left for India three years ago with his second wife.

The accused, Tara Bahadur Thapa Magar, has a wife, a son, and a daughter.
