KATHMANDU: The International Panchang Decision Committee has announced that Vijayadashami should be celebrated in Australia on Ashwin 27, 2081 BS (Oct 13, 2024).

The committee issued a statement following differences in the celebration date of Vijayadashami (Tika) and Laxmi Puja between the ‘Bhaskar Nepali Panchang’ published by the Vedic Council of Australia and Nepal’s Panchang.

The statement, issued by Committee Chair Prof. Dr. Madhav Bhattarai and Secretary Laxman Panthi, clarified that there had been some confusion.

They emphasized the need to observe festivals based on local lunar calendars, as per the prescribed religious texts.

In Australia, Vijayadashami falls on Ashwin 27, 2081 BS (Oct 13, 2024) according to the sunrise-based Dashami date, so people in Australia should receive the Dashain Tika on this day.

In Nepal, the Dashami date falls on Ashwin 26, 2081 BS (Oct 12, 2024), and since there is no Dashami date during the sunrise on Ashwin 27 (Oct 13) in Nepal, the festival should be celebrated on Ashwin 26 (Oct 12).

The committee further clarified that the Shravan Nakshatra is not a determining factor for Vijayadashami. As the festival is based on the lunar date, the Tika ceremony should be observed on Ashwin 26 (Oct 12) in Nepal and Ashwin 27 (Oct 13) in Australia, according to the statement.
