KATHMANDU: The Department of Meteorology has forecast heavy rainfall centred in western Nepal.

This is due to a low-pressure system that developed in the Madhya Pradesh region of India, leading to predictions of heavy rain in the west.

From Thursday evening until Saturday, heavy rainfall is expected in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim States.

The department has issued a warning that some areas in Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim may experience extreme rainfall.

Districts such as Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Dadeldhura, Doti, Baitadi, Achham, and Surkhet are at high risk of flooding and landslides.

In the afternoon, Sudurpaschim State will see mostly to fully cloudy skies, with partial to moderate cloud cover in other States.

There is a possibility of light to moderate rain, accompanied by lightning, in many parts of Sudurpaschim and in a few areas of other States.

Additionally, there is a chance of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in a few locations of Koshi, Bagmati, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim States.

At night, Sudurpaschim State will remain mostly to fully cloudy, while other provinces will experience partial to moderate cloud cover.

Light to moderate rain with lightning is expected in many parts of Sudurpaschim and some areas of other States.

A few locations in Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim could see heavy rain with thunderstorms, with very heavy to extremely heavy rain likely in isolated parts of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim.

Heavy rainfall poses risks of soil erosion, flooding, landslides, and debris flows, particularly at night when monsoon rains are more common.

The department warns of potential inundation in urban and lowland areas, rising water levels in large and small rivers and streams, and disruptions to road and air transportation. It urges people to take necessary precautions and make preparations accordingly.
