Prisoner dies during treatment at Koshi Hospital

KATHMANDU: A prisoner in Morang District Jail has passed away.

The deceased, 34-year-old Manikumar Tamang, a resident of Belbari Municipality–4, died while receiving treatment at Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar on Sunday.

According to the Morang Jail administration, Tamang, who had been ill, was admitted to the hospital for treatment on the evening of September 5. Jailor Chetraj Baral confirmed that he died while undergoing treatment.

Tamang had been suffering from swelling in his legs and a pre-existing heart condition.

He passed away at around 11:45 AM on Sunday during his treatment, said Baral.

Tamang was involved in motorcycle theft and had multiple theft cases filed against him in five different courts, including Morang, Jhapa, Sunsari, Ilam, and Dhankuta.

All cases were under judicial consideration.

In Morang, Tamang faced two separate theft cases. In one case, the Morang court sentenced him to four months in prison and fined him Rs. 15,000. In the other case, a bail amount of Rs. 100,000 was demanded.

As Tamang was unable to pay the bail amount, he was sent to prison on February 3, 2024, by court order for pretrial detention.

In the theft cases, the Dhankuta court had set a bail amount of Rs. 350,000, while the Sunsari court demanded Rs. 200,000.

Morang District Jail currently houses 1,059 prisoners, including four minors and 97 women.
