KATHMANDU: The traditional cultural festival ‘Gai Jatra’ has begun today with various events organized throughout the country.

This festival is dedicated to the memory of deceased relatives, with people dressing up cows or people as cows and parading them in their respective areas.

During the parade, offerings such as milk, fruits, bread, beaten rice, yogurt, and other grains and goods are given in reverence.

There is a religious belief that participating in the parade helps deceased individuals cross the Vaitarani River, a symbolic journey to the afterlife, by holding onto the cow’s tail.

Although Gai Jatra is celebrated in different regions of the country, it is particularly vibrant in the Kathmandu Valley.

The festivities began early this morning in Basantapur, where the area is alive with the lively atmosphere of Gai Jatra.

The celebrations feature satire, performances addressing social issues, dance, music, and songs reflecting the mournful tones of the Ramayana, drawing a crowd in Basantapur to honor the festival.
