KATHMANDU: India is marking its 78th Independence Day today, celebrating the end of British colonial rule on August 15, 1947. The nation is observing the occasion with various cultural events, flag-hoisting ceremonies, and patriotic programs across the country. The President and Prime Minister have delivered speeches reflecting on India’s progress and achievements over the years, emphasizing themes of unity, advancement, and future aspirations. This year’s celebrations also spotlight India’s contributions to global affairs and its role on the international stage.

Independence Day, observed annually on August 15, is celebrated this year with the theme “Viksit Bharat,” or “Developed India.” This theme represents the vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, aligning with the government’s commitment to national progress. The year 2047 will mark a century of India’s independence.

The significance of Independence Day lies in commemorating India’s liberation from over two centuries of British rule on August 15, 1947. The quest for independence began with the Revolt of 1857 and gained momentum around 1920 under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership. On July 4, 1947, the British House of Commons introduced the Indian Independence Bill, leading to India’s freedom on August 15.

On the eve of India’s independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India, hailed the occasion as a ‘Tryst with Destiny.’ On August 15, 1947, Nehru hoisted the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. This tradition continues today, with each Prime Minister addressing the nation from this historic location.

Independence Day serves as a reminder of the beginning of a new era, the struggle for freedom, the sacrifices of freedom fighters, and the achievement of liberation from British rule. It is observed as a national holiday.

Each year, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag on Independence Day and delivers a speech reflecting on the nation’s progress, accomplishments, and future goals. This year’s address will be Prime Minister Modi’s 11th consecutive Independence Day speech and his first during his third term.
