KATHMANDU: The newly appointed Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Syed Rifat Raiyan, who is considered a close confidant of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, took the oath of office and secrecy on Sunday.

This appointment is the latest in a series of new appointments aimed at replacing key figures associated with the previous regime, which was overthrown by a student-led uprising.

The old guard, seen as linked to the former government, has been steadily replaced.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to the senior-most judge of the High Court, Ahmed, according to the President’s press secretary, Shiplu Zaman.

“He has become the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh,” Zaman stated.

Ahmed, who has studied at Dhaka University, Oxford University, and Tufts University in the United States, brings significant academic credentials to his new role.

Meanwhile, after witnessing a surge in protests on the streets of Dhaka, 76-year-old Hasina fled to neighboring India by helicopter on Monday.

Hasina’s government, which ruled for 15 years, has been accused of numerous human rights violations, including the extrajudicial killings of thousands of political opponents.
