Zia, aged 78, was sentenced to jail in 2018 on corruption charges during the tenure of Hasina's government, which accused her of corruption.
KATHMANDU: Bangladesh’s President Mohammad Shahabuddin has ordered the release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who has been imprisoned.
This decision comes after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country, prompting President Shahabuddin to direct Zia’s release from jail.
Zia, aged 78, was sentenced to jail in 2018 on corruption charges during the tenure of Hasina’s government, which accused her of corruption.
Previously, President Shahabuddin had also ordered the release of students who were arrested during protests against quota systems and in opposition to the government.
According to President Shahabuddin, an interim government will now be formed, new elections will be announced, and the ongoing curfew imposed nationwide will come to an end.
However, clarity remains on who will lead the government.
