KATHMANDU: The Nepali Embassy in Dhaka has confirmed the safe return of most Nepali students affected by ongoing protests in Bangladesh.
In a statement issued on Monday, the embassy confirmed the safety of around 400 Nepali students currently in Bangladesh.
“The majority of Nepali students studying in Bangladesh have returned to Nepal. All Nepalis, including the remaining 400 students, are safe, and the Embassy maintains regular communication with them,” the statement conveyed.
The embassy has urged Nepali nationals to exercise caution and remain vigilant.
Those seeking to return to Nepal or needing assistance are urged to contact the embassy’s Second Secretary Yojana Bomjan or Riya Chhetri.
Violence in Bangladesh has intensified significantly, with recent clashes between police and anti-government demonstrators claiming at least 90 lives. The unrest began with student leaders launching a civil disobedience campaign, demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
Originally sparked by protests against a quota system in civil service jobs, the movement has expanded into a broader anti-government protest. Thirteen police officers were killed during an attack on a police station in Sirajganj.
Since July, the death toll has exceeded 280 amidst widespread reports of violence and the imposition of curfews.
