KATHMANDU: As crowds at the Koshi Barrage increase, concerns about safety have risen, leading to the imposition of restrictions. Authorities have prohibited pedestrians from walking on the bridge and vehicles from accessing it due to the heightened risk of individuals attempting to jump into the Sapta Koshi River and commit suicide.

The Koshi Barrage, which connects the Sunsari and Saptari districts of Nepal and forms the border between the Koshi and Madhesh States, has had notices posted banning access to the bridge and its adjacent areas. This measure is in response to the repeated instances of individuals from various regions of India and Nepal attempting to leap off the barrage.

The restrictions come amid concerns that pilgrims visiting for the month of Shrawan, as well as other visitors, may attempt to jump from the barrage during the “Bolbam” ritual, which involves filling water from various places. The police have noted a pattern of people jumping off the barrage while taking selfies or photos, leading to numerous rescue operations.

According to police statistics, 75 people were rescued during the fiscal year 2080/081 (2023/24). To address the growing danger and prevent further incidents, the police have placed awareness notices for the public. The police urge everyone to adhere to these restrictions and stay cautious for their own safety.
