KATHMANDU: A prisoner serving a sentence for rape has escaped from Koshi Hospital, according to the prison administration.

Mohammad Ahmed, a 24-year-old inmate known as Aryan Mohammad Ahmed Khan, was being held at the Morang District Jail in Biratnagar.

He was admitted to Koshi Hospital on Tuesday for treatment of stomach pain.

Jailer Tulsi Paudel reported that Ahmed managed to escape from the hospital at approximately 5:15 AM on Thursday.

Ahmed, who had been convicted of rape, was serving his sentence at the Morang District Jail. To ensure Ahmed’s security, the prison had assigned Assistant Constable Rajeev Rajbhandari and Constable Gyanendra Bahadur Katwal to guard him.

According to Paudel, Ahmed took advantage of the opportunity to escape while supposedly going to the toilet, pushing the police officers aside in the process. An intensive search for the fugitive is currently underway.

The Morang police have launched an investigation into the incident, as confirmed by Police Spokesperson DSP Gyanendra Bahadur Basnet.  The Morang District Court had sentenced Ahmed on February 12, 2023, to 12 years in prison and imposed a fine of 500,000 Nepalese Rupees.

Additionally, the court ordered Ahmed to pay 100,000 Rupees in compensation to the victim and to deposit 20,000 Rupees into the victim relief fund. Ahmed was supposed to remain in prison until February 15, 2034, but he escaped less than 18 months into his sentence.
