Two held in Kathmandu for illegal call bypass operation

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested two individuals on allegations of illegally operating international call bypass (VOIP) from Kathmandu.

The arrested individuals are identified as 40-year-old Bhupendra Shrestha from Banasthali, Lisankhu Pakhar Rural Municipality-5, Sindhupalchowk, and 24-year-old Khum Prasad Giri from Kapn, Gauriganga Rural Municipality-4, Jhapa.

According to the police, the arrests were made based on information that they were involved in illegal BIOIP operations without permission from any authorized body, as per investigations coordinated between Nepal Telecom and Ncell with technical support from the Central Investigation Bureau.

From Bhupendra’s residence in Banasthali, Kharibot, police seized various equipment used for VOIP, including a router, a VOIP gateway with eight ports, an inverter, a battery, one Nepal Telecom SIM card, and nine Ncell SIM cards.

The police have informed that further investigations under the Telecommunications Act 2053 have been initiated, and additional five days’ remand has been sought from the Kathmandu District Court to continue the investigation into the case.
