Nepali folk music icon LP Joshi passes away at 88
He breathed his last at Life Line Hospital in Damak-1, where he was undergoing treatment following a sudden illness at his residence on Thursday evening.
KATHMANDU: Renowned Nepali folk singer Laxmi Prasad (LP) Joshi has passed away at the age of 88.
He breathed his last at Life Line Hospital in Damak-1, where he was undergoing treatment following a sudden illness at his residence on Thursday evening.
Born in Dhankuta Bazaar in 1993 BS, Joshi was bestowed with the title ‘Emperor of Folk Songs’ from the general public.
He was known for his numerous timeless classics such as “Riting Riting Nabajau Binayo,” “Wallo Kholo Pallo Kholo, Kamilako Golo Hajur,” “Nigalo Ghari Ma Chyakhura Nachyo,” and “Kanchhi Matyang Matyang,” among others.
His song “Riting Riting Nabajau Binayo” was recorded in 2017.
Besides being a singer, Joshi was also involved in painting and acting. He acted alongside actress Bhuwan Chand in the movie “Hijo Aaja Bholi” and featured in nine other films.
Punyaprasad Kharel, chair of the Susheli Literary Family, described Joshi’s demise as an irreparable loss to Nepali folk music, noting that Joshi had the unique ability to infuse deep emotions into his music.
In 2013 BS, his first song “Nepalko Maya…” was recorded by Radio Nepal.
Joshi’s extensive travels to hundreds of villages in Nepal contributed significantly to the enrichment of original Nepali songs and the treasury of Nepali folk music.
He received numerous awards both within the country and abroad for his contributions. His solo album “Riting Riting,” released by Music Nepal in 2053 BS, was also well received in the market.
