KATHMANDU: Indian cricket will soon begin the era of Gautam Gambhir. This journey will kick off with a tour of Sri Lanka.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have retired from Twenty20 cricket, have found places in the One Day International squad.

However, both are over 35 years old. Until when will they continue to be part of the ODI or Test squad?

Gambhir has expressed his views on the matter.

He believes that despite both players having the enthusiasm to continue playing cricket, their fitness and sustained performance will determine whether they remain in the One Day and Test teams in the near future.

Before departing for Sri Lanka, Gambhir stated at a press conference, “They can contribute significantly on the big stage and in competitions. Whether it’s the T20 World Cup or the One Day World Cup, if they maintain their fitness, they could also participate in the 2027 One Day World Cup.”

However, Gambhir emphasized that the personal decisions of both players will ultimately determine their futures.

He remarked, “I cannot make their decisions for them; they alone must decide when to retire. The players will decide how much time and contribution they can give to the team’s success. Rohit and Virat are global players of immense importance, and any team would want to keep them for a long time.”

Gambhir’s insights provide a glimpse into the potential paths ahead for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Indian cricket.
