KATHMANDU: Former State Minister Ramchandra Raya has been murdered in Sarlahi.

He was fatally attacked with a sharp weapon in his former residence in Ratanpur, Chandranagar Municipality-1, during Sunday night.

Local residents informed the police upon discovering Raya’s bloodied body.

Superintendent of Police Suvas Chandra Bohara of Madhesh State Police Office stated that an investigation into the murder has been initiated.

Ray, aged 80, had been residing in three different places including Kathmandu and Mangalbas.

His home in Sarlahi is where the incident occurred.

He served as a state minister for land management about 30 years ago. Concerns about possible personal or political motives behind the murder have been raised.

A person employed at the house for domestic work, who was taken under control for questioning by the police, was found sleeping in the same house at the time of the murder.

This individual reportedly provided information to the authorities regarding the incident.

Authorities from district and provincial police offices have begun an investigation into the matter.

“Property disputes can often lead to such crimes,” said a security official, adding, “An 80-year-old elderly person wouldn’t typically be seen as under threat of security.”
