KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress lawmaker Pratima Gautam has emphasized the seriousness with which the government must handle disaster management.

Speaking at Monday’s parliamentary session, she highlighted that the public suffers when the state does not take disasters seriously.

She pointed out significant damage to public assets due to disasters, urging the government to inform the legislature about its disaster management efforts.

“If the government does not provide relief to the affected last year, citizens face the same distress this year,” she said. “Considering the country’s vulnerability to potential disasters, we must question when such crises might occur rather than if they might.”

She stressed the need for the state to be prepared for any disaster, no matter how unlikely, drawing attention to the impact of past disasters on the country’s development strategy.
