KATHMANDU: In two separate incidents of gunfire in Indian-controlled Kashmir, two soldiers and six suspected militants were reportedly killed, as announced by the police on Sunday.

Inspector General of Police in Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, stated that security forces conducted “back-to-back operations” in villages of Kulgam district, where clashes ensued. “We have recovered bodies of two militants from Modergam and four militants from Frisal Chinnigam,” Kumar said.

This recent escalation marks the latest in ongoing tensions in the disputed region, claimed in full by both India and Pakistan.

Since 1989, Muslim-majority Kashmir has seen a persistent insurgency by groups demanding independence or union with Pakistan, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths.
