KATHMANDU: Uruguay has advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing Copa America by defeating Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals.

The match ended in a goalless draw after the regulation 90 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

During the shootout, Brazil’s Éder Militão and Douglas Luiz failed to convert their penalties.

Although Uruguay’s captain José Giménez missed his attempt, Manuel Ugarte’s decisive goal in the final round secured Uruguay’s place in the semifinals.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 74th minute when Uruguay’s Nahitan Nández received a red card, reducing his team to 10 players. Despite being a man down, Uruguay managed to hold Brazil at bay until the end of regular time.

With this victory, Uruguay is set to face Colombia in the semifinals.

The other semifinal will feature a contest between Argentina and Canada.

This defeat marks the end of Brazil’s journey in this year’s Copa America.
